Scratchboard

Where my oil paintings represent the 'rock'n'roll' side of my personality, scratchboards are my 'zen haiku' side. They are pure drawing, requiring patience and skill. Scratchboards are panels with black ink over a white clay layer, and using a sharp tool (in my case, an x-acto knife) to scratch away the black ink creates a fine white line. It's the exact inverse of pen and ink: it's drawing with light instead of shadow, and watching the image emerge from the black board is mesmerizing.

The finished piece is sprayed with several coats of fixative, and does not require glass in framing. I usually frame them in wide black frames with silver liners that set the finished artwork off beautifully.

SPECIAL NOTES: My African works are currently (spring 2014) showing at Holland & Holland in London, England - please contact the flagship gun room at +44 (0)207 4994411 for more details.

I'm also showing scratchboard with Creekhaven Inn, the host for my Texas workshops - my piece of a big Texas whitetail is currently for sale there.

The gallery where each piece is available is noted on the large image pages.
