The Wolf Road
oil on stretched canvas, 30 x 40
$9800

This is my first wolf painting. The subject has been a little overdone, and I didn't want to paint a wolf until I felt I had something original to say. This gorgeous boy is moving into shadow - perhaps symbolic of the species' still somewhat unsettled status in reality - but caught in a shaft of light. The painting title comes from the Pawnee term for the Milky Way, and reflects the regard with which many native American cultures viewed wolves.

The abstract background was fascinating but also frustrating; I worked on this piece for nearly 3 weeks, trying to get that background to feel 'right'.
